Too much insanity today so I share with you a band that makes me very very happy and gets me through many hours at work. Yes, there are other bands I like, but Ra Ra Riot gets it done.
This song in particular, Ghost Under Rocks, I have a tendency to sing extremely loud. It also features prominently during some of my private de-stress dance parties.

PS Watch the video PLUS the Rhumb Line Live film. Please?
PSS I accidentally thought it was Friday. Thanks CL! All fixed.

I was so organized this morning. Holiday cards addressed, stamped, and ready to drop into the post as I skipped along to work. Ok, so I missed Hanukkah. My rule is if they are in-home by New Years then I’m on time.
Shockingly, I actually ran into a friend whilst training into the city. Exciting and distracting conversation, Tesco + ATP + beer + metal bands, commenced. We arrive at my final destination, hugs, kisses, holiday well wishes are exchanged. I exit and realize at the post office that my cards are still on the train.
Will someone find these and mail them? Throw them away? Cut the stamps off?
Curious.

Librairie de France is closed! I have been traveling so much that I hadn’t been to visit since July and I guess August was it. Such a wonderful little store that had been in Rockefeller Center since it was built in 1935. Toys, games, books, papers – a Francophiles slice of heaven and my secret hiding place in Midtown.
Au revoir, mon ami.

Absence of Light

Wild weather is upon us. High winds, cold puffs of blinding frozen vapor, stumbling about in 15″+ of accumulation. All three provide serious ingredients for a fun time. Play time prep: dinner at the Islands with the usual players, as well as a very very special guest appearance by B&E, and loads of beer and bubbles. Yes.
After dinner and in-between the snowball fights and slippery slidey chases down the street, I made an executive decision that snow angels needed to be made and kept throwing myself into perfect drifts of powdery perfection. Today I feel like I was hit by a car. Perhaps one of those big sparkly banks was actually a motor vehicle? Perplexed .
Must be useful today as guests are coming and le house is le messy. But first? Lunch! Grilled cheese with Grafton cheddar on peasant bread, homemade tomato soup, sliced Pink Lady apple. SNL from last night. Three Aleve.
Nap time. I mean, time to be productive.

The poisoning seems to be on the lam but now I’m congested. Seriously, what gives with December + me? Every year. Hospital, stitches, broken things. If this is all I received, and am gonna receive, from the Chrismukkah Fairy and Santa then I accept. At least my sense of humor is back – thank god – so I’m definitely on the mend. For now.
Full props to the congee that I made last night. The remains of that huge pot of goodness is in the fridge waiting for me. If you’re curious: 4 scallions cut in half or thirds. 5-6 slices of ginger. 16 cups liquid – I use stock. 2 cups rice. 2 lbs organic chicken breast. Throw all in the a pot and bring to a boil, cover, simmer, with an occasional stir. Pull the chicken out to cool and shred. Go Fish and take out the onion and ginger. Continue to simmer, and stir. The rice breaks down and becomes the consistency of grits/oatmeal/cream of wheat. Add the shredded chicken back in, stir gently and you’re done. About 1-1/2 hours total. Scoop into a bowl and either eat plain or season with some soy, sesame oil, slivers of fresh ginger, thin slices of scallion and cilantro. Pick and choose or go for all. My congee breakfast with a soft poached egg: image below.
I just pressed my first cup of medicine, thank you Dr. Stumptown, and am attempting to plan my day. I have to clean house as super friendlies are coming to play this week. I want to bake Panettone – this is a close approximation to my recipe. Fuck raisins. We’re going with tastiness such as dried cherries, cranberries, and those twee zante currants. Hey.. maybe I should chop up a bit of chocolate to add in. I have a bar of Scharffen Berger 62% semi-sweet in the cupboard. Hmm.
Rumor has it that we are supposed to get about a foot of snow today. Tres awesome! I have these crazy “pan” style sleds that I flew back from the French Alps two years ago that are dying to be used.
Germs or no germs if it comes down I’ll be the first one out making snow angels.

Today started out so nice. Now? Sigh. The flu, something poisonous that I ate, being utterly exhaustigated.. who knows. I suspect poison. All that’s registering is I_am_ill.
Picked up supplies to make Congee which contains all the healing properties a body needs to get back on track. Stock, ginger, scallion, chicken, rice, all cooked down to a delicious savory porridge that fills you with the right amount of warmth to carry you to bed. All I want is a big bowl topped with thin slivers of raw ginger, a bit of cilantro, a swirl of sesame and soy. Then bed.
I am doomed.

The germs have loosened their hold but I’m suspicious. Why give up? Hmmm.
Another spicy lunch from Hing Won – yes the shredded pork and pickle, loads of tea, EmergenC, and chocolate chip cookies. Feed a cold, right? Right.
Tibi “Imperial” silk dress – This is super cute with a flat boot, or ballet flats, but I can throw on a pair of 100mm Choo boots and swank it up right quick.
Wolford tights – two pairs, it’s cold!
